Sound City (2013)

Sound City is a documentary about the famous recording studio that was settled in LA were hundreds of successful albums were recorded. The film is directed by the Dave Grohl who is the vocalist for the Foo Fighter and former drummer for Nirvana. It's written by Mark Monroe who has written several other documentaries in the past. Sound City features a lot of interviews with the artists who recorded in the studio. This doesn't sound special and it isn't. I myself am just a big fan of rock music and it just great that Dave Grohl has contacted so many people from Fleetwood to Mccartney.

Sound City is basically about to whole history of studio and how the studio had to adapt to the electronic revolution of music. This is the best part of the documentary just because the way it was told was thrilling, comedic, exiting and educative. That are just the spots that a documentary needs to hit to make it work and it shows Dave Grohl was defiantly the one to be in the directors chair. When you learn in Sound City that is was not just a studio like the others, That the place was kinda trashy but still managed to produce killer records you know that this story was meant to be told. Not that with other documentaries the stories weren't from that importance. Most of them do but take for example the Foo Fighters documentary Back and Forth from 2011. The story in that one was interesting but more bands have been through the same things as the Foo Fighters. So it really isn't that of a big deal as it is for Sound City.

Then comes the second part were we get told sound city is no more very abrupt. What was very weird because I would defiantly would have wanted to hear more about that other than: "We couldn't keep up."
But then the part were the artists who have recorded at Sound City come over to Dave's Studio and record tracks together for the soundtrack and to make a happy end any way! Although it was fun to see Mccartney and Grohl play together I found this part much too long and it didn't have the seem feel to it as the first. For me I think this was better off as an extensive featurette. This does show a reason why maybe Dave Grohl shouldn't have been in the directors chair.

Verdict: Sound City hits all the right spots to make it amazing but with a disappointing second part it won't be the best documentary this year.

7 out of 10 Dave Grohl's
